Why encryption at the IP layer?
Encryption at the IP layer protects data directly at the network (IP) layer. As a result, all data traffic between two endpoints – such as between sites, data centers or remote employees – remains consistently secured, regardless of the underlying infrastructure or transmission technology used.
In contrast to Layer 2 encryption, which is based on local networks, IP layer encryption works across networks – for example across the Internet or other shared networks. This makes them particularly suitable for public or hybrid network infrastructures, where data is not only transmitted within a closed network.
